Texas State Railroad Set to Kick Off 2013 Season!

On Saturday, March 2, the Texas State Railroad will kick off its 2013 season. In January and February the trains underwent annual maintenance and inspection. They are now ready for passengers to once again ride the rails through East Texas.
The Piney Woods Steam Excursions will depart both the Palestine and Rusk depots at 11am. A popular feature from years past is being brought back this year. That is, the passing of the trains at the halfway point between the two depots.

Preservation Texas Names Texas State Railroad a Saved Site On Its Tenth Anniversary Retrospective List of Texas’ Most Endangered Historic Places

AUSTIN, TEXAS…The Texas State Railroad have been named by Preservation Texas, Inc. to its tenth anniversary retrospective list of Texas’ Most Endangered Historic Places.

Originally named to the 2007 list of Texas’ Most Endangered Historic Places, the railroad is designated as saved on the 2013 list.

Preservation Texas officials announced the selections on the steps of the Texas State Capitol on Preservation Day, February 20.  The annual announcement is part of Preservation Day activities organized by Preservation Texas.  Advocates from all over the state come to participate in informational sessions, meet with legislators at the Capitol and get an in depth look at lessons to be learned from the sites named to the list.

Texas State Railroad Society Plants 262 Trees

treeplanting_250On Saturday, February 16, the Texas State Railroad Society planted 262 trees along the section of Texas State Railroad track that runs through the I.D. Fairchild State Forest. Varieties included Dogwood, Eastern Red Bud and Red Maple. The planting was supervised by Jason Ellis of the Texas Forest Service.

The Texas State Railroad will begin its 2013 season on Saturday, March 2 (Texas Independence Day.) Piney Woods Steam Excursions will depart from both the Palestine and Rusk depots on Saturdays and Sundays, at 11am. Special weekday runs will be offered during the two weeks of Spring Break. Dates are Tuesday through Friday March 12-15 and 19-22. The Easter Egg Express will depart from the Rusk depot on Friday and Saturday, March 29 & 30. This interactive event offers Easter egg hunts for both older and younger children, live entertainment, games, a duck race, bunny hop races, a hay ride, photo station, temporary tattoo station, and much more. Snow Coney Island will have food available and of course, the Easter Bunny will be on hand!


Texas State Railroad Conducts Test Run

Tuesday, January 8, the Texas State Railroad tested a new section of track that was completed in November.

The new 2.8 mile section connects the TSRR rail line once again to a Class 1 main line national railroad – the Union Pacific rail line in Palestine. The last time the rail was used commercially was by the Texas South Eastern Railroad in December 1969.

The purpose of the test run was to familiarize TSRR engineers with the Union Pacific rail line and yard, as well as with the dispatching protocols for the TSRR train when it is operating on UP track.

Results of the 2012 Gold Rail Awards are in!

For the fourth year in a row, the readers of Cowcatcher Magazine have voted the Texas State Railroad as the “Best Excursion Railroad in a six-state area. They also voted the TSRR as having the “Best Excursion Railroad Theme Train” (Polar Express.)

In November, Cowcatcher Magazine surveyed its readers to recognize the best in model railroad and rail /rail enthusiasm in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Kansas. The Gold Rail Awards consists of 12 categories in total. Complete results of the survey will be published in the January/February issue of Cowcatcher Magazine, plus they will posted on the magazine’s web site: www.cowcatchermagazine.com.

TSRR Offers January Special

The Texas State Railroad is offering special rates at its parks and campgrounds during the month of January.

Reservations are 50% off for camping, pavilion and dining hall rentals. Reservations can be for any date in 2013, and for facilities in either Rusk or Palestine, but they must be made during the month of January in order to get the discount.
Nestled in the piney woods of East Texas, TSRR’s two parks and campgrounds offer the unique opportunity for individuals, families and groups to stay on-site at a historic railroad.
